Abandoning FGM
In Guinea-Bissau, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) affects 45% of women aged 15-49 years. Plan International worked with ex-practitioners, women who themselves once earned a living by performing FGM on young girls, who have since abandoned the practice and are now actively campaigning for its eradication.
Abuse of people with disabilities in Ghana
In one of the most logistically and emotionally taxing projects I’ve ever undertaken, Human Rights Watch sent me to visit several “prayer camps” in Ghana where physically and mentally disabled patients are chained, starved and abused as part of their treatment.

After an occupation by armed groups was disrupted by French and Malian forces, local populations were left to deal with the aftermath in the north of the country. In this part of my fact-finding mission with Plan, I spoke to several girls who were targeted by the insurgency to find out what kind of support they needed going forward.
