This is a selection of videos that I produced for various news outlets in my years as a freelancer — many of which are no longer available to embed here, unfortunately. I will update if I get permission from those publications to host them locally.
The Allure of Laamb
This video and the article I wrote to accompany it introduced The New York Times’ audience to the complex blend of tradition, spectacle and capitalism that is Senegalese wrestling.
How climate change is helping Al Qaeda
Africa’s Sahel region is a naturally fragile environment, and climate change is making matters worse. Here, higher temperatures and infrequent rains exacerbate insecurity by turning pastoralists and farmers into combatants. See the GlobalPost (now TheWorld) article here.
The fight against female genital cutting
FGC is widely practiced throughout Africa and has resisted outside condemnation for decades. Some efforts to eradicate the practice, however, have found success in Senegal and The Gambia through destigmatization rather than denunciation. I was part of a team who reported on those efforts for The New York Times. Watch the video here or click this link to see the article and photos.
